Although Pushkar is loved by tourists, many inhabitants of the Indian city live in extreme poverty. Hundreds of families are living is self-made tents and need to survive without any income and educational background. During her trip through India, Jaira saw the desperate circumstances in which the people of Pushkar have to live. She immediately felt the desire to help them. As a 21-year old student she made the admirable decision to establish her own foundation, with which she started the Sona Pushkar Project. The first job was to build the Blue House: a residence where five families could live. Next to that, Jaira made sure they received food packages every month.

The next step is to make sure that the youth receives education. Students for Children agrees that this is the best way to break the cycle of poverty. That is why Students for Children supports this project by facilitating all the materials to furnish a newly built class room. This will allow ten children to go to school, under which four youngsters of about sixteen years old. They did never have a chance to go to school before, which means their job opportunities would be minimal. Students for Children is very happy that they could now gain knowledge and skills with the lessons of a private teacher. He will make sure their job opportunities increase significantly.

Next to this, six children from primary school age will have access to education as well. The Sona Pushkar Project has accomplished that they could go to a local primary school in the neighbourhood in the morning. In the afternoon, they will go back to the class room which is furnished by Students for Children. They will get extra lessons in courses like English by a private teacher. Furthermore, there will be attention for activities like doing handicrafts, playing little games and doing sports. They also have a chance to get a shower and food. Since this project has just been implemented, the number of beneficiaries is kept limited to see how things are working out. The idea is to extend the number of children in the long run. The Sona Pushkar Project has also made a working place for the mothers of the children, just a few meters away from the classroom. With sewing machines they are making bags, rugs and clothes. This employment project is already generating a decent income and the aim is to let this be high enough to take care of their families in the future.
